Contracting authority is looking to acquire a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) for performing high resolution imaging of materials science specimens and for performing various kinds of in-situ testing. Primarily, in-situ micromechanical testing with a nanoindenter and a miniaturized mechanical tester are foreseen, however, we visualize future users to come up other innovative in-situ tests using this FE-SEM. It is intended to be used for measurements on all material classes - metals, ceramics, polymers, biomaterials, composites, thin films, coatings and additively manufactured materials. The FE-SEM will be a part of the Hydrogen Materials Interaction Research Infrastructure (H2MIRI) and will be located in the Tampere Microscopy Center (TMC) eco-system. H2MIRI is a research infrastructure funded through Research Council of Finland’s Finnish Research Infrastructure (FIRI) local research infrastructure call. H2MIRI facilities are distributed at three locations – Tampere University, University of Oulu and VTT. The acquired FE-SEM will complement other advanced electron microscopy facilities at TMC (https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/tampere-microscopy-center) and Advanced Mechanics of Materials Infrastructure (https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/advanced-mechanics-materials) at Tampere University by enabling in-situ mechanical testing. Since it will be a part of H2MIRI infrastructure in Finland, it will have both domestic and international users. Therefore, high performance (imaging quality and resolution) is emphasized for this acquisition.
