Oligonucleotides refer to oligos which are short, usually 15-100 base long, single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules. In each nucleotide there are one of four different natural bases (A,T,G and C) or analogs e.g. inosine. Oligonucleotides are also known as oligos, primers or probes. Oligos can be used e.g. as primers for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or DNA sequencing. The specifications of the oligos to be supplied is discussed in more detail in Annexes.

VTT uses oligos mainly for polymerase chain reactions and DNA sequencing. Around 2 300-2 800 desalted DNA oligos are ordered annually. Majority of these are short (i.e. 18-50 bp) oligos in a small scale but also longer 50-100 bp oligos are ordered. In addition, some purified and modified DNA oligos are ordered. Estimated quantities may vary during the contract period. The informed oligo needs are estimates and VTT is not committed to order any quantity.
